from the DESK OF the President

Greetings to our ARMA Palm Beach-Treasure Coast Chapter Members & Friends!

2012 marks the beginning of a push to “Stay Connected”. This year started with a survey of our membership in January to reestablish the chapter’s most important relationships. We asked what you wanted from your chapter and we received a great response! If you didn’t take the survey or if you’ve thought of additional questions or suggestions, please feel free to email me at meganhanney@lwdd.net or contact any of our Board Members at any time. Your opinions and comments will shape the way in which we provide the information, education and networking that makes a chapter membership worthwhile.

Since a board election was not held in 2011, we conducted a special election in February this year. The Board felt it was imperative to have an official election that got us all in the proper position to review and eventually update our Chapter By-Laws as many of the requirements set forth, specifically regarding board term limits, are no longer feasible at this time. This board is committed to ensuring our chapter stays connected to the ARMA community as a whole and remains a viable and active chapter. Thank you to all of our Board Members for their continued dedication to making sure this chapter achieves what it sets out to do each year. A special thank you and welcome to our newest Board Members, Mike Padykula and Peter Richardson for answering our plea for help!

I would like to take a moment to congratulate our newest CRMs, who also happen to be Board Members, Mike Padykula and Mauricio Perry! From what I’ve heard, our chapter is unique in that over 20% of our members have achieved the CRM designation. Many have expressed a willingness to mentor members that are interested in pursuing the CRM designation and at least two of them have graded exams in the past. This is a tremendous resource and we are all very appreciative of their knowledge and experience. If you are interested in learning more about the CRM or are looking for guidance throughout the process, please contact me and I will put you in touch with Jo Chavez or you can contact her directly.

Please mark your calendars to attend our next seminar which will be held, Friday, June 8, 2012 at 11:30am at the Lake Worth Drainage District office in Delray Beach. You should have received an invitation via email already. If not, please let us know so that we can update our contact information.

Remember to stay tuned to www.armapbtc.org. We look forward to an informative and successful year. Thank you in advance for your participation. See you soon! Sincerely, Megan Hanney President ARMA PBTC Chapter

Sincerely,
Megan Hanney

Volunteers Needed: Certified Information Governance Professional (IGP)

ARMA International is pleased to announce it has begun the development of a new credential – the Certified Information Governance Professional (IGP). The IGP will recognize the efforts of those professionals who are most accomplished with respect to the implementation of the Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles® (GARP®). This project will require the talents of numerous professionals in various roles at various times over the next several months as we develop this certification. There are four major processes for which we will need your help:

  1. Almost immediately, we will need a focused group of subject matter experts in the field of information governance to participate in a job task analysis (JTA) workshop. Under the direction of trained workshop facilitators, the panel of experts will identify all the activities performed in this job, along with the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the tasks.
  2. Next, we will need subject matter experts for an online survey that will be conducted to help us validate the JTA results.
  3. Once the JTA results are validated, subject matter experts will be needed to write test items.
  4. Finally, we will need qualified candidates to take the exam, which will allow us to test the exam and use the results to set the certification’s passing score.

What does the information governance professional’s job look like?

Information governance professionals are strategic in nature. They are in or work with those in the highest levels of the organization. Their span of control and influence is broader than traditional RIM and is heavily influenced by information technology. The IGP also takes on a proactive role in identifying opportunities and business needs that are not being met, determining what content an organization should create and how it can be effectively used within the organization.

IGPs routinely interact with those key functional areas that are necessary to implementing and maintaining good information governance; in addition to IT, they frequently interact with legal/compliance, records management, and business unit leaders. They have a firm grasp on key interdisciplinary strategies required to respond to litigation, implement new systems, and incorporate new technologies – in short, to do all of the things that are characteristic of good information governance!

Finally, they are able to communicate effectively with the C-suite in order to achieve support – both financially and rhetorically – for the way all information is handled within the organization. For more information, visit our Certified Information Governance Professional Frequently Asked Questions. To volunteer for any of the opportunities listed above now, submit your application!
